Does Vinegar Kill Weeds? Only the Part You Can See

Household vinegar burns off top growth and leaves the roots alive, so perennial weeds regrow in days. What it is genuinely good for, and why salt is a bad idea.

Vinegar works, in the sense that you can spray a dandelion in the morning and it will be brown by lunchtime. Whether that counts as killing the weed depends entirely on what kind of weed it is.

Acetic acid is a contact herbicide. It destroys the tissue it lands on and goes no further. What it never does is travel down to the root.

What acetic acid actually does

Leaves are waterproofed by a waxy cuticle. Acetic acid dissolves it, and the cells underneath lose water and collapse. On a hot sunny day the effect is dramatic and fast — visible browning within a couple of hours.

But the acid is neutralised as it reacts, and it does not enter the plant’s vascular system. A glyphosate-type systemic herbicide is carried down into the root; vinegar simply is not. So the outcome depends on where the plant keeps its reserves:

It is not selective, and it does not stop at the weed

Vinegar damages any leaf it lands on. Spray drift onto a border, a lawn edge, or a neighbouring seedling does exactly the same thing there. Use it on hard surfaces and bare ground, on a still day, with a coarse droplet rather than a fine mist.

Kitchen vinegar versus horticultural vinegar

Household vinegar is around 5 percent acetic acid. It will brown small seedlings on a hot day and do very little to anything established.

Horticultural vinegar is 20 to 30 percent. It is markedly more effective on top growth — and it is genuinely dangerous. At that strength acetic acid causes serious burns to skin and can cause permanent eye injury. It needs gloves, eye protection, and care in storage. Some regions regulate its sale for exactly this reason.

The important thing is that going stronger does not change the mechanism. A 30 percent solution kills more leaf, faster, and still does not reach the root.

Heat helps more than people expect. The same spray applied on a hot, sunny, still day works far better than on a cool overcast one — enough that timing is worth more than concentration for ordinary weeds.

The salt problem

The widely shared recipe adds salt, and often dish soap as a surfactant.

The soap is fine — it helps the liquid stick to waxy leaves rather than beading off.

The salt is not. Salt does increase the kill, because it desiccates plant tissue and disrupts root function. It also does not break down, wash away cleanly, or get consumed by soil life. It accumulates, damages soil structure, and can leave ground incapable of supporting plants for years. Worse, it moves with water — a path treated with a salt mix drains into whatever is downhill of it.

There is a narrow case for it: a crack in a driveway, far from any planting, where you never intend to grow anything. Everywhere else, leave it out.

What to use instead, by situation

Paths, gravel, patio cracks. Vinegar is reasonable here, and so is boiling water, which is free and does the same contact job. For a permanent fix, a flame weeder or simply improving the surface does more.

Perennial weeds in beds. Dig them out, root and all. For taprooted weeds a long narrow spade or a weeding knife is worth more than any spray. Where digging is impractical, repeated cutting every time regrowth appears will eventually exhaust the root, though it takes a season.

Large infested areas. Sheet mulching — cardboard covered with several inches of compost or bark, left in place for months — kills almost everything under it by denying light, and improves the soil while doing it.

Lawns. Vinegar has no place here, because it kills grass just as readily as weeds. Improving the lawn’s density is what actually suppresses weeds long-term.

Judge a weed killer by where the plant stores energy

This is the whole question, and it saves a lot of wasted effort. If the plant’s reserves are in the leaves — a seedling, an annual — killing the leaves kills the plant. If its reserves are in a root, a rhizome, or a taproot, anything that only removes top growth is pruning, not weeding. Vinegar, boiling water and flame weeding are all in the second category.

The stronger versions kill top growth faster and more completely, but they still do not reach roots, and at that concentration they are genuinely hazardous — they can cause serious skin and eye injury and require gloves and eye protection.

Should you add salt to a vinegar weed killer?

No, not anywhere you want to grow anything. Salt does add killing power, but it does not break down — it accumulates in the soil, damages structure, and can leave ground unable to support plants for years. It also moves with water into beds and neighbouring soil. This is the one popular recipe worth avoiding entirely.

What kills weeds permanently and naturally?

Nothing sprayed on the leaves does, if the weed is a perennial. Lasting control comes from removing the root — digging out taproots, repeated cutting to exhaust reserves — or from denying light with mulch or sheet cardboard over several months. Any method that only removes top growth will need repeating.
