Raised beds are sold on looks and bought on price, which is how people end up replacing a rotting bed after four years or discovering their carrots have nowhere to go. The material decides the lifespan, the depth decides the crops, and the fill decides the actual bill.
Depth is the decision people get wrong
Bed depth is the one specification that permanently limits what you can grow, and it is the one most often chosen by price.

A 6-inch bed is not a cheaper version of a 17-inch bed. It is a different, smaller product, and it quietly removes about half of what a vegetable garden is for.
Depth also decides your crop calendar. Garlic sits in a bed for nine months and wants 8 inches; strawberries are shallow-rooted and happy in 8–10; carrots and parsnips are the crops that genuinely need the extra depth.
Price the soil before you price the bed
A 4×8 bed at 17 inches takes roughly 40 cubic feet of fill. In bags that is commonly $250–400 — more than the bed. Ordering bulk screened topsoil blended with compost typically costs a third of that, but you need somewhere for a delivery to be tipped. Work this out first; it changes which bed size makes sense.
What to fill it with
The most common expensive mistake is filling a new bed with pure compost. It looks perfect in April, slumps by a third by August, and holds so much water that roots suffocate.
A mix that works in practice:
- 60% screened topsoil — the structure and mineral content
- 30% compost — the fertility
- 10% coarse aeration — bark fines, perlite, or pumice
Leave the bottom open to the ground. Put cardboard down over grass first to smother it; it will rot away within one season and let roots go deeper than the bed itself. If you are building the bed over lawn you intend to keep elsewhere, note that grass seed germinates in 5–30 days — worth knowing before you decide which areas to smother and which to reseed.
Once planted, watch the leaves rather than the calendar: raised beds warm and dry faster than open ground, and curling tomato leaves in a new bed are almost always a watering-consistency problem rather than a disease.
Fill the bottom third cheaply
On a deep bed, the bottom 6 inches can be branches, twigs, and leaves — the hügelkultur trick. It saves a meaningful amount of bought soil, holds water like a sponge in summer, and slowly feeds the bed as it breaks down. Expect the level to drop the first year and plan to top it up.

- Years before it fails
- This is the whole cost question. A $90 bed that rots in four years is more expensive than a $200 bed that lasts twenty, and rebuilding means emptying and refilling it.
- Cost to fill, not cost to buy
- A 4×8 bed 17 inches deep takes roughly 40 cubic feet of soil. At bulk prices that is often more than the bed itself, and it is the number nobody puts on the box.
- Depth for what you grow
- Lettuce and herbs are happy in 6 inches. Carrots, parsnips, and potatoes need 12–18. Buying shallow to save money quietly removes half the crops you can grow.
- Heat behaviour
- Metal beds warm soil earlier in spring — an advantage in the north and a real problem in the south, where edge soil can cook roots.
- What it is made of, chemically
- Anything holding food soil needs to be inert. Galvanised steel and untreated rot-resistant timber are fine; older treated lumber and unknown recycled plastic are not worth the doubt.

When not to buy at all
If your native soil drains and you can dig it, you may not need a bed at all — 3 inches of compost forked into open ground outperforms a shallow raised bed for a fraction of the cost. Raised beds earn their money when the ground is compacted, contaminated, waterlogged, solid clay, or too low to reach comfortably.
