Loam Soil: What It Is, and How to Get It From Clay or Sand
Loam is a particle-size ratio, not a product you buy. How to test what you have with a jar of water, and the only method that genuinely changes it.

Loam is not a product. It is a ratio — roughly 40 percent sand, 40 percent silt, 20 percent clay — and it is prized because that particular mix happens to do everything reasonably well.
Which leads to the useful and slightly deflating conclusion: you almost certainly cannot turn your soil into loam. You can make it behave like loam, and that is a different job with a much better success rate.
The three particles

Clay particles are extraordinarily small — thousands of times smaller than sand — and flat, with electrically charged surfaces that hold on to water and nutrients. That is why clay soils are fertile and also why they waterlog and set hard.
Loam is the compromise: enough sand for drainage and workability, enough clay and silt for water and nutrient retention.
Finding out what you have
The jar test, which is genuinely worth doing once:
- Fill a straight-sided jar about a third with soil, removing stones and debris.
- Top up with water, leaving an inch of air, and add a drop of dish soap.
- Shake hard for two minutes.
- Leave it undisturbed for 48 hours.
Sand settles within a minute, silt over a few hours, clay over a day or more. You get visible bands. Measure each and convert to percentages of the total.
The ribbon test, for a rough answer in two minutes: wet a handful to putty consistency and squeeze it upward between thumb and forefinger into a ribbon.
- No ribbon, gritty — sand or loamy sand

- Over 2 inches, shiny — clay

Why you cannot make loam, and what to do instead
To move a clay soil into the loam range you would need to add many tonnes of sand and silt per bed and mix it through the full root depth. It is not a garden-scale operation.
Adding sand to clay makes it worse
This is the most damaging piece of common soil advice. A modest quantity of sand mixed into clay does not open it up — the sand grains sit in a clay matrix that fills every space between them, and the result is denser and harder than what you started with. The comparison to making concrete is not rhetorical; the mechanism is similar. Use organic matter.
The thing that actually matters is not texture but structure — how particles clump into crumbs, with pore spaces between them for air, water and roots.
Good structure is what people are really describing when they praise loam. And structure can be built, in any texture, by one method:
Organic matter, every year
Compost, well-rotted manure, leaf mould, spent mushroom compost. Two to three inches, annually.
What it does:
- In clay: organic matter and the microbial gums it feeds bind fine particles into larger crumbs. Water drains between the crumbs; air reaches roots. Clay behaves like loam.
- In sand: it fills the excessive pore space and holds water and nutrients that would otherwise wash straight through.
It is the same amendment for opposite problems, which is one of the more satisfying facts in gardening.
Apply it as a mulch on the surface rather than digging it in, in most cases. Worms take it down, structure builds from the top, and you avoid destroying the aggregates you are trying to create.
The other structural habits
- Stop walking on beds. Compaction destroys structure faster than anything else. This is the whole argument for raised beds and defined paths.
- Do not dig wet clay. Working clay when it is saturated smears the particles and destroys structure for a season.
- Keep the soil covered — mulch, or a living plant. Bare soil caps in rain and erodes.
- Feed the biology. Worms, fungi and bacteria build structure; they need organic matter to do it. See worm castings.
Expect visible improvement in two to three years and a genuinely different soil in five. It is slow, and it is the only thing that works.
Buying soil in
If you are filling raised beds or a new garden, “topsoil” is a loosely defined term and quality varies enormously — some is screened loam, much is subsoil, sand, or green waste compost.
Ask for a texture analysis before ordering a bulk load, or get a sample and run a jar test on it. For containers specifically, do not use topsoil at all — see potting soil for why garden soil fails in a pot.
