How Long Can Ducks Go Without Food? And Without Water
An adult duck copes with a day without food but only hours without water in heat. The real limits, why water is the tighter one, and what ducklings need.

The question is nearly always asked about food and the answer that matters is about water.
The two clocks
| Without food | Without water | |
|---|---|---|
| Cool weather, foraging | Days, with little effect | 8–10 hours fine; a day is a problem |
| Cool weather, bare run | About a day | A day is a problem |
| Hot weather | About a day | Hours. This is the dangerous one |
| First sign | Laying stops | Panting, lethargy, refusing to move |
Ducks drink roughly a litre a day each, more in heat, and they empty, foul and tip drinkers at a rate that surprises anyone coming from chickens. A single container is not a plan.
Food without water is worse than no food
A duck cannot swallow dry feed without water to wash it down and can choke on it. If the drinker might fail, take the feed out too — an empty feeder is safe, a full one beside an empty drinker is not.
Ducklings are not small ducks
- First 24–48 hours: running on absorbed yolk. This is why day-olds can be shipped
- After that: food and water within reach at all times, not rationed
- No reserves. A duckling that goes off food declines in hours, not days
- Water must be shallow enough that they cannot get in — pebbles in the trough
There is no useful “how long” figure for ducklings. The answer is that they are not left.
Planning a weekend
- More water than they can possibly drink, split across three or four containers in different places, so one tipped tub is an inconvenience rather than a death
- Shade over the drinkers, since the risk is a hot afternoon
- A large covered feeder that will not clog in rain
- A secure house and, ideally, an automatic door — the predator risk over two unattended nights is higher than the shortage risk
- Beyond two nights, someone looks in. Not negotiable
If they have gone off lay
Before anything exotic, check the drinker at four in the afternoon rather than at eight in the morning. Ducks economise on laying first, and an afternoon-empty drinker is one of the most common and least noticed causes of a flock that quietly stops.
