Do Squirrels Eat Sunflower Seeds? Yes — Rather Too Well
Sunflower seed is a squirrel's favourite feeder food, and black oil is the worst offender. What to feed instead, and the one barrier that reliably works.
On this page
Yes — it is close to their favourite thing on the feeder. Which is awkward, because black oil sunflower is also the single best seed for attracting birds.
That conflict is the whole problem, and seed choice only half-solves it.
Seeds, ranked by how much trouble they cause
| Seed | Squirrels | Birds |
|---|---|---|
| Sunflower hearts | Love it — no shell at all | Nearly everything takes it |
| Black oil sunflower | Love it | The best all-round seed |
| Striped sunflower | Take it; slightly tougher shell | Larger birds |
| Peanuts | Love it | Jays, titmice, woodpeckers |
| Corn and cheap mixes | Love it | Mostly ground birds; much is wasted |
| Nyjer | Not keen; slow going | Goldfinches, siskins |
| Safflower | Usually refuse — bitter | Cardinals, chickadees, titmice, nuthatches, house finches |
Safflower is the practical swap. You lose some species and keep most of the ones people actually want at a feeder, and squirrel interest drops sharply.
But do not oversell it
Safflower is a deterrent, not a barrier. In hard weather a squirrel will eat it rather than go hungry, and some individuals simply develop a taste for it. Anyone promising a squirrel-proof seed is overstating the case — the seed narrows the problem, the baffle ends it.
Safflower is the usual substitution, and the seed comparison for cardinals covers how long birds take to switch to it.
The barrier that works
The numbers are what make it work. A squirrel jumps roughly 4 feet vertically and 8 to 10 feet horizontally, and climbs almost anything with texture.
So:
- Smooth metal pole. Not wood, not a tree, not a fence
- Stovepipe or cone baffle below the feeder, at least 15 to 18 inches long
- Feeder 4 to 5 feet off the ground, so the baffle sits above jump height
- 8 to 10 feet of clear space in every direction — branches, fences, walls, sheds, the roof
- Not hung from a branch. A branch is a walkway
Get all five right and it works indefinitely. Get four right and you have built a squirrel feeder.
Weight-activated feeders are the other reliable approach: a perch or shroud that closes over the ports under a squirrel’s weight while staying open for a chickadee.
What does not work
- Greased or oiled poles. Cruel — it fouls fur the animal cannot preen clean — and the effect wears off within a day
- Hanging from a wire without baffles on both sides of the line
- Ultrasonic repellers. No evidence
- Plastic owls. Habituated within days
- A taller pole on its own. They climb it
- Trapping and relocating. Illegal in many places, usually fatal to the animal, and the vacancy fills
On cayenne pepper
It does work — birds cannot detect capsaicin and mammals can — and pepper-treated seed is sold for exactly this. But the dust gets into human eyes and airways while filling feeders, it can get into a squirrel’s eyes, and some wildlife organisations discourage it.
A baffle does the same job without introducing an irritant, so keep pepper as a fallback for a spot where a pole genuinely cannot be sited.
Is it bad for the squirrels?
Not acutely, but a sunflower-heavy diet is genuinely poor for them.
- High fat, low calcium. A squirrel filling up on feeder seed instead of a varied natural diet can develop metabolic bone disease, and young animals are most at risk.
- Concentration causes conflict. One rich fixed food source turns ordinary territorial behaviour into constant fighting.
- It raises local density beyond what the habitat would otherwise support, which is also how yards end up with more chipmunks and rats.
Which is the honest reason not to feed squirrels sunflower deliberately: not that it poisons them, but that easy abundance displaces a better diet and concentrates animals that would otherwise spread out.
In the vegetable garden
Squirrels also take sunflower heads off the plant as they dry, usually a day or two before you had planned to harvest.
- Bag the heads in muslin, mesh or paper once the petals drop
- Or cut them early and finish drying under cover
- The same tactic covers sweetcorn, which they strip at exactly the point it ripens
