What Do Chipmunks Drink? Mostly Water They Never Find

Chipmunks get most of their moisture from food — fruit, fungi, insects and green shoots — and drink free water only when it is easy to reach.

Water — when it is easy to reach. But most of a chipmunk’s moisture comes from what it eats: fruit, fungi, insects, earthworms and green shoots are largely water. A well-fed chipmunk needs very little on top.

Where the water actually comes from

This table answers the question on its own
SourceShare of intake
Moist food — berries, fruit, fungi, insects, wormsMost of it
Dew on leaves and grassSignificant, early morning

Bird baths, dripping tapsOpportunistic
Metabolic water from burning fat and carbohydrateSmall but real, and matters in winter

Winter

Chipmunks do not truly hibernate. They enter bouts of torpor in the burrow and wake periodically to eat from a cached store.

  • Metabolic rate drops enormously, and water demand drops with it
  • Burrow air is humid, so losses through breathing are low
  • Cached seeds and nuts plus metabolic water cover the rest

That is why you do not see chipmunks hunting for water in January.

If you want to put water out

Make it shallow, or put stones in it

Small mammals drown in steep-sided water containers far more often than people expect. A shallow dish, or a deeper one with stones piled so an animal can climb out, removes the risk entirely.

Do it because you want to watch them, not because they need it. They range widely enough to find dew, puddles and damp ground on their own.

What not to give them

Nothing but plain fresh water. Like most adult mammals chipmunks are lactose intolerant, so milk causes digestive upset. No juice, no sugar water, no milk.

If you want fewer chipmunks, remove seed, not water

Moisture is replaceable from a dozen natural sources. A reliable pile of spilled sunflower seed under a feeder is not. Food is the draw; water barely registers.

An honest note on “how long without water”

You will find confident numbers online. There is no reliable published figure for chipmunks, and anyone quoting a specific number of days is guessing. What is true: small mammals with high metabolic rates dehydrate quickly, and a trapped chipmunk with no food or water is in trouble within a day.

Common questions

What do chipmunks drink?

Water, when they can get it easily — from puddles, dew on leaves, the shallow edge of a pond, a dripping tap or a bird bath. But most of their daily moisture comes from what they eat rather than what they drink. Fruit, berries, fungi, insects, earthworms and fresh green shoots are all largely water, and a chipmunk on a good summer diet needs very little free water on top of that.

Do chipmunks need a water source in the garden?

Not usually, and putting one out is more about watching them than helping them. They range widely enough to find dew, puddles and damp ground, and their food supplies most of what they need. A shallow dish does no harm if you want one, provided it is genuinely shallow or has stones in it so a chipmunk that falls in can climb out — small mammals drown in steep-sided water containers surprisingly often.

How long can a chipmunk survive without water?

There is no reliable published figure, and anyone quoting a specific number of days is guessing. What is known is that small mammals with high metabolic rates dehydrate quickly, and that a chipmunk eating moisture-rich food is effectively drinking as it eats. The practical answer is that a healthy chipmunk with access to normal food is not water-stressed in a temperate garden, and a trapped one without food or water is in trouble within a day.

Do chipmunks drink in winter?

Very little, because they are not fully active. Chipmunks do not truly hibernate — they enter bouts of torpor in a burrow and wake periodically to eat from a cached food store. Their metabolic rate drops enormously during torpor, water demand falls with it, and the burrow air is humid. Any water they need comes from the cached seeds and nuts and from metabolic water produced as they burn fat and carbohydrate.

Will a bird bath attract chipmunks?

It can, though food is a far stronger draw than water. If chipmunks are already visiting a feeder, a water source nearby simply makes the area more convenient. If you want to discourage them, removing spilled seed does far more than removing water, since the moisture is replaceable from a dozen natural sources and a reliable pile of sunflower seed is not.

Is milk or anything else safe to give them?

No. Like most adult mammals chipmunks are lactose intolerant and milk causes digestive upset. Nothing other than plain fresh water belongs in a dish put out for wildlife — no sugar water, no juice, no milk. If you find an injured or orphaned chipmunk, contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator rather than attempting to feed or water it yourself.
